Otosclerosis.jpegA Stapedectomy is  is a surgical procedure of the middle ear performed in order to improve hearing. If the stapes footplate is fixed in position, rather than being normally mobile, then a conductive hearing loss results. There are two major causes of stapes fixation.

The laser STAMP is a minimally invasive procedure resulting in stable long-term hearing improvement. Success depends on proper candidate selection of patients with accessible anatomy and minimal otosclerosis confined to the fissula ante fenestram. Advantages of this procedure include preservation of stapes anatomy and stable long-term, high-frequency hearing improvement.

A patient recently wrote:
Though in need of surgical treatment for otosclerosis and hearing loss, I postponed my stapedotomy for many years, as I was apprehensive of keeping a prosthesis in my ear. After reading Dr. Silverstein's paper on laser stapedotomy minus prosthesis (Laser STAMP), I wanted to give it a try and started asking Dr. Silverstein questions from an engineer's point of view. He was the only ENT surgeon that answered my questions patiently and accurately. Though the STAMP procedure couldn't be done in my case, with Dr. Wazen's laser precision skills in doing the stapedotomy and Dr.Silverstein's guidance during the surgeries, I got very good overall improvement in hearing and am very grateful.  My hearing is now such that I'm able to attend meetings at work without the help of a sound amplifier iPhone app that I was using before the surgeries.  I also do not have to ask my family to repeat what they said many times!  I believe Dr. Silverstein and Dr. Wazen are the finest surgeons in the world for otosclerosis, using cutting edge technology. I will recommend them to anyone.
